Custom Kitchen Remodeling & Design in Cape Cod

Make Your Kitchen the Heart of the Home Again

If your kitchen feels stuck in another decade or simply stopped working for the way your family lives now, that's exactly the kind of problem we solve every day. At Thomas Michael's Kitchen and Bath, we've been designing and building kitchens for Cape Cod homeowners since 2003, completing over 2,000 projects across the peninsula and South Shore along the way.

What makes us different is how we work. As a design-build company, the same team that designs your kitchen is the one that builds it. There's no handoff between a design firm and a separate contractor, no finger-pointing when questions come up, and no version of your vision getting watered down somewhere in the middle. Just one team, working toward the same goal from start to finish.

What Is Design-Build Kitchen Remodeling?

Design-build means one company handles both the design and the construction under a single contract, rather than sourcing design services and construction separately. The advantage is that your designer and your builder are on the same team, so the plan that gets drawn is one that can actually be built on time and on budget.

Cape Cod Kitchens Come with Their Own Set of Challenges

Remodeling a kitchen on Cape Cod isn't quite the same as remodeling one anywhere else in Massachusetts. The homes here have their own quirks, the environment puts real demands on materials, and the towns each have their own rules about what you can and can't do. After over 20 years working inside these homes, we've learned to plan for what other contractors get surprised by.

A few things we account for on every project:

  • Salt air and humidity take a toll on materials that perform perfectly fine inland. Standard cabinet finishes, hardware, and fixtures can warp, corrode, or deteriorate faster than expected in a coastal environment. We select materials specifically rated for these conditions, so your kitchen holds up the way it should five and ten years down the road.
  • Most Cape Cod homes were built between the 1950s and 1990s, and what's behind the walls often tells a different story than what's visible. When homeowners want to open up a galley layout or move a wall, we regularly find outdated wiring, older plumbing configurations, and load-bearing walls that don't show up on any plan. We build time and contingency into every project scope because of this.
  • Historic district requirements in towns like Sandwich and Barnstable add a layer of review that can take weeks if you don't know the process. We handle all permitting across every Cape Cod town, including the additional approvals required in historic districts, so you don't have to learn a new municipality's rules mid-project.
  • Seasonal timing matters more on the Cape than almost anywhere else. Many of our clients need construction wrapped up before the summer season starts or prefer to schedule work after Labor Day. We plan project timelines around your occupancy schedule, not the other way around.

A couple of things worth knowing before you start planning:

If you're hoping to have your kitchen ready before summer, start the design process at least four to six months out. Between the in-home assessment, design presentation, feasibility study, and permitting, there's more lead time involved than most homeowners expect, and Cape Cod permit offices get busy in the spring.

If your home was built before 1980, budget for the possibility of an electrical or plumbing upgrade during demolition. It doesn't happen on every job, but it happens often enough that we flag it upfront, so it never catches anyone off guard.

Every kitchen project we take on is different, but the scope of what we handle stays consistent: design, construction, permitting, and everything in between. Here is what each of those looks like in practice.

Custom Kitchen Design

The design process is where your project takes shape, and it's where we spend real time getting things right before anything gets built. Our designers work with you to understand how you use your kitchen, what's frustrating about it now, and what you'd want to feel walking into it every morning. With us you'll have the opportunity to explore different directions and refine the concept until you're confident in the plan.

Cabinetry and Storage Solutions

We work with KraftMaid, Waypoint Living Spaces, and Jeffrey Alexander, all of which carry Limited Lifetime manufacturer warranties. Beyond the brands, we focus on storage configurations that make sense for the kind of kitchens Cape Cod homes typically have.

We also understand that smaller footprints and galley layouts need a different approach than a wide-open new construction kitchen, and that's something we design around from the start. That often means pull-out drawer bases, pantry towers, lazy Susans, and built-in organizers in places a standard layout would leave unused.

Countertops and Backsplashes

Our countertop options include Cambria Quartz, Grothouse Wood Surfaces, and CafeCountertops, with selections ranging from classic to contemporary depending on the direction your design takes. These are established brands with proven performance in coastal environments, and our familiarity with each one means we can guide you toward the right material for your budget and your home.

Full Project Management and Permitting

Each job has a dedicated project manager who handles subcontractor coordination, scheduling, and all permit applications from start to finish. You don't need to show up at a town office, track down an inspector, or follow up on paperwork. That's our job.

Demolition Through Final Installation

We manage the full scope of construction from tear-out through punch list. That includes everything in between: plumbing, electrical, tile work, cabinet installation, countertop templating and fitting, hardware, light fixtures, and final finishes, all running through the same team under the same project timeline.

Our 7-Step Kitchen Remodeling Process

One of the most common concerns we hear from homeowners is that remodeling feels unpredictable. For many costs shift, timelines stretch, and it's hard to know who's responsible for what. Our process was built specifically to take that uncertainty off your plate. Here's exactly what working with us looks like, from the first conversation to the day you're cooking in your new kitchen.

1

Free Design Consultation

The first step is a free consultation, either in our showroom or virtually, where we listen to what you want, talk through your budget range, and figure out together whether we're the right fit for your project.

2

In-Home Assessment

Once we've had that initial conversation, a designer visits your home to take measurements and get a firsthand look at your existing space. Seeing the kitchen in person allows us to design around what's actually there rather than making assumptions from a floor plan. A small fee may apply for this visit.

3

Custom Design Presentation

With your measurements and wish list in hand, your designer creates detailed 3D renderings of your new kitchen. Afterward, we invite you back to the showroom to review the designs alongside a Good/Better/Best budget breakdown, so you can see what's possible at different investment levels and choose the direction that fits your kitchen and your budget.

4

Feasibility Study

Before anything moves to contract, we conduct a thorough cost analysis that accounts for the full project scope, any structural considerations, permitting requirements, and detailed line-item costs. This is where potential complications get caught and dealt with on paper rather than mid-construction.

5

Contract and Final Pricing

Once you're satisfied with the design and the numbers, everything gets documented in a detailed written contract covering the project timeline, full scope of work, material selections, and total cost. Nothing moves forward on a handshake. Every decision is in writing before the first tool is picked up.

6

Construction and Installation

Your project manager coordinates all trades, manages the schedule, and serves as your single point of contact throughout the build. You'll also have 24/7 access to your project portal through JobTread, where you can check the current schedule, review updates, and send messages to the team at any time.

7

Final Walkthrough and Warranty Activation

When the work is complete, Tom walks through the finished kitchen with you to make sure every detail meets expectations before the project is closed. All installation and construction work is backed by a 1-year workmanship warranty, and your cabinetry carries a Limited Lifetime warranty through the manufacturer.

What Does a Kitchen Remodel Cost in Cape Cod?

Most homeowners come to us knowing they want a new kitchen but are unsure what to actually budget for one. We'd rather give you a straight answer than make you sit through a consultation just to find out. Most Cape Cod kitchen renovation projects fall somewhere between $45,000 and $95,000, depending on the scope of work and the materials involved.

A few things tend to move that number in one direction or the other. For example, kitchen size and whether the layout is changing are usually the biggest factors for a higher cost, since reconfiguring a floor plan involves more trades and more time than working within the existing footprint.

Cabinetry grade is another significant one, with stock, semi-custom, and fully custom options sitting at very different price points. Countertop material, appliance packages, and finish selections each play a role as well. Historic district reviews and structural modifications are two factors that can move the budget meaningfully, and we identify and account for both during the feasibility study so there are no surprises once construction begins.

A Cape Cod Kitchen Remodel in Practice

A homeowner in Sagamore Beach came to us wanting a full kitchen transformation. The existing space was dated and disconnected from how the family actually used it, and they had a clear vision where they wanted something sophisticated, coastal, and built to last.

The design centered on custom gray cabinetry, marble countertops, and stainless-steel appliances anchored by a central island with seating. We kept the wood beams and hardwood floors to honor the character of the home while the new layout opened the space up and made it functional for everyday living and entertaining.

The finished kitchen became one of our most referenced projects. It shows what happens when a homeowner's personal style drives the design from day one rather than getting diluted along the way.

Meet the Team Remodeling Your Kitchen

When you hire Thomas Michael's Kitchen and Bath, you're not getting handed off to a rotating crew of subcontractors. The same core team that designs your kitchen builds it, and the people you meet at the start of the project are the ones accountable at the end of it.

Tom Anderson, Owner

Tom has been working in kitchen and bath remodeling for 33 years, and he co-founded Thomas Michael's Kitchen and Bath in 2003 after growing frustrated with an industry that either overcharged for design or underdelivered on installation. He's an NKBA Certified Designer and stays personally involved in projects from the design stage through the final walkthrough. When you work with Thomas Michael's, you're working with someone who has a personal stake in how your kitchen turns out.

Meagan Marshall, Production Manager

Meagan has 12 years of design experience and holds her NKBA certification. What she brings to every project is the ability to catch problems in the design stage that would cost real time and money to fix in the field. She's the reason the plan you approve in the showroom is the kitchen you actually get.

Your Project Manager

Your dedicated project manager has over 30 years of construction experience, holds a Construction Supervisor's License, and previously owned and operated his own construction business. That background means he manages your project the way an owner would; on schedule, on budget, and built to plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most kitchen remodels run between 6 and 12 weeks from the start of construction, depending on the scope of work. Projects involving layout changes, structural modifications, or custom cabinetry typically sit toward the higher end of that range. One thing worth planning around on the Cape is seasonality. If you need the kitchen functional before summer or prefer to schedule work after Labor Day, we build the project timeline around that from the start.
All installation and construction work carries a 1-year workmanship warranty. Cabinetry is covered separately under a Limited Lifetime manufacturer warranty. If something comes up after the project is complete, you reach out to our office, we document it, determine whether it falls under workmanship or manufacturer coverage, and schedule a service visit. You're not left waiting on anyone to get back to you.
Yes, and most of our projects do stay within the existing footprint. That said, some of the most impactful changes come from relatively modest layout adjustments, like removing a non-load-bearing wall, relocating an island, or reconfiguring where appliances sit. During the feasibility study we look at what's structurally possible and what actually makes sense for your space and budget before anything is decided.
