Technical Kitchen Design & 3D Space Planning

Cape Cod Kitchens Designed by NKBA-Certified Professionals, Built by the Same Team

A kitchen remodel lives or dies in the planning phase. Before a single cabinet is ordered or a wall is touched, every decision about layout, materials, storage, and flow needs to be resolved on paper. That's where kitchen design comes in, and it's where Thomas Michael's Kitchen and Bath have spent the last 23 years getting it right.

Our design team holds NKBA certification, the nationally recognized standard for professional kitchen and bath designers and has completed over 2,000 projects across Cape Cod and the South Shore since 2003. Because we operate as a true design-build firm, the same team of skilled craftsmen that creates your design is the team that builds it. That structure removes a problem most homeowners don't know they have until it's too late to fix.

If your kitchen feels like it's working against you, we can show you exactly how to fix that.

Our Kitchen Design Services

Designing a kitchen involves much more than choosing cabinets and finishes. Our NKBA-certified designers handle the technical planning and detailed decisions that shape how the space functions once construction begins.

During the design phase, we help you plan every part of the kitchen so the final build matches both your goals and your home’s layout.

Kitchen design services typically include:

  • Professional kitchen layout and space planning.
  • 3D kitchen renderings to visualize the finished space.
  • Cabinetry design and specification.
  • Countertop and material selection guidance.
  • Lighting layout planning for task, ambient, and accent lighting.
  • Appliance placement and workflow optimization.
  • Budget planning with Good / Better / Best options.
  • Collaboration with our construction team to confirm buildability.

Because our designers and builders work together, every design decision is reviewed with construction in mind before materials are ordered or work begins.

Designing for the Way Cape Cod Homeowners Actually Live

No two households use a kitchen the same way. A family hosting summer gatherings every weekend has completely different needs than a couple living on the Cape year-round, and a seasonal homeowner has different priorities than both. Good kitchen design starts by understanding which of those you are.

At Thomas Michael's Kitchen and Bath, every design conversation begins with how you actually live in your home, not just how you want it to look. Here's how we approach design for the three types of homeowners we work with most on the Cape:

Hosts and Entertainers:

If your kitchen is the room that fills up first when people come over, the design needs to work as hard as you do. We focus on open layouts that eliminate bottlenecks, islands sized for both prep and casual seating, double ovens for cooking at scale, and built-in beverage stations that keep guests out of the cook's workspace. In homes with more square footage to work with, two islands can create distinct zones where one handles all the cooking and prep while the other becomes the natural place people gather.

Seasonal Homeowners:

A kitchen that goes unused for months at a time has its own set of requirements. We focus on low-maintenance materials that age well without constant upkeep, storage layouts that make arriving and closing down the home straightforward and finishes that hold up through humidity and temperature swings without needing attention between seasons.

Year-Round Residents and Empty Nesters

For homeowners in this stage, the design priorities shift toward a kitchen that's genuinely easy to live in every day. That means wider walkways, drawer-base storage for easier access, pull-out shelving, and layouts that work effortlessly for two people daily but scale naturally when family visits.

Once we understand how you live, the next step is making sure the design reflects that in every technical decision, including how space is divided, which materials are chosen, and how the room is lit.

Meet the Design Team

Every kitchen we design is handled by a certified professional, not handed off to a junior associate or a salesperson with a catalog. Tom Anderson, our owner and lead designer, brings 33 years of kitchen and bath experience and holds an NKBA certification, the nationally recognized credential requiring demonstrated expertise in space planning, materials, and building code compliance.

Alongside Tom, Meagan Marshall serves as our in-house NKBA-certified designer, bringing 12 years of design experience to every client consultation. Together, they work directly with our production team throughout the entire process, so the people designing your kitchen are the same people accountable for how it gets built.

1

Design Agreement

Once you're ready to move forward, your project starts immediately. We define the scope, establish the design direction, and set clear expectations for timeline and budget before anything else happens.

 2

Site Visit

Your NKBA-certified designer visits your home to take precise measurements, photograph existing conditions, and identify any structural or code considerations early. For Cape Cod homes, this step is especially important.

This is because, older builds from the 1950s through the 1980s often have load-bearing walls, low ceiling lines, or permit requirements that need to be understood before the design goes any further. Catching these early is what prevents costly changes later.

3

3D Design Presentation

Using everything gathered during the site visit, your designer creates a full 3D rendering of your new kitchen. This isn't a mood board or a rough sketch. It's a detailed visual of your actual space showing cabinet placement, countertop materials in context, lighting zones, island configuration, and traffic flow.

You’ll review this design presentation alongside a Good, Better, Best budget outline in our showroom, where you can draw inspiration from our full displays, so every decision you make is informed and visual before any commitment is made.

4

Trade Walk

Your design goes in front of our trade partners covering plumbing, electrical, and construction before a single line item is contracted. Every element gets confirmed as buildable exactly as drawn, which is what eliminates the most common cause of mid-project redesigns and unexpected costs.

Once the trade walk is complete and you're satisfied with the design, we move into a detailed contract with a defined scope, selected materials, and a clear project timeline. At that point you'll also receive your full design package, including your 3D renderings, material selections, and project documentation, so everything is in your hands and on record. From there, you'll have real-time access to project schedules and updates through our client portal.

Functional Layouts

Imagine cooking in a kitchen where every inch works exactly as it should — no bumping into appliances or guests, just effortless movement. That’s what we mean by flow. From open concepts that invite gathering to cozy breakfast nooks for quiet mornings, the right design approach makes any space, even the smallest, feel spacious and welcoming.

Custom Cabinetry & Storage

Many Cape homes weren't built for modern storage needs. We create custom cabinets that look timeless yet solve today's challenges. Think hidden pull-outs, walk-in pantries, and clever drawers that maximize space while keeping your counters clear — all paired with thoughtful appliance placement that makes cooking and gathering effortless.

Countertops & Backsplashes

The right surface sets the tone for your kitchen, shaping both its look and how you experience it day to day. Natural stone brings a cool, timeless quality, while quartz offers the kind of durability busy households rely on. From there, the backsplash carries the design forward — marble lends elegance, soft greens introduce a coastal feel, and bolder tiles spark personality. Each element builds on the last, coming together as a reflection of your style and the character you want your Cape Cod kitchen to have.

Wall Colors & Lighting That Sets the Mood

Thoughtful wall colors create the perfect backdrop for your kitchen's personality. Good lighting transforms a kitchen from functional to magical. We layer ambient, task, and accent lighting so the same room feels bright for morning prep, welcoming at dinner, and warm for late-night conversation.

Energy-Efficient Appliances & Materials

We recommend eco-friendly appliances and finishes designed to handle Cape Cod's coastal climate while saving you money and reducing maintenance.

Materials, Layouts and Styles We Design With

Material selection is where a design either holds up on Cape Cod or falls short within a few years. Every recommendation we make is based on what performs well in coastal environments, what reflects the latest trends without sacrificing longevity, and what fits within your budget. Here's what a typical design appointment covers:

Kitchen Layouts

Because many Cape homes have structural constraints, layout decisions are always made around your specific floor plan; not a generic solution dropped into your space. We work with a full range of configurations including open concept, galley optimization, L-shape, U-shape, traditional, and island setups:

Examples of Common Kitchen Layout Options for Cape Cod Homes
Kitchen Layout Best For Key Advantages Potential Limitations
Galley Kitchen Narrow homes or cottages Efficient workflow with everything within reach Limited space for multiple cooks or seating
L-Shaped Kitchen Open floor plans Flexible design that allows space for an island or dining area Corner cabinets can require smart storage solutions
U-Shaped Kitchen Larger kitchens needing maximum workspace Plenty of counter space and storage Can feel enclosed if not balanced with lighting or openness
Island Kitchen Homes designed for entertaining Adds prep space, seating, and a natural gathering area Can restrict walkways if space is tight
Peninsula Layout Kitchens where a full island won't fit Creates additional prep space and seating without needing extra room
Countertops

Our countertop selection includes Cambria Quartz, Grothouse Wood Surfaces, and CafeCountertops. Cambria is a particularly strong choice for Cape Cod kitchens given its non-porous surface, which resists moisture and requires minimal maintenance in humid environments.

Fixtures and Hardware

For coastal homes, hardware finish selection matters as much as style since certain metals hold up significantly better against salt air than others. We work with Kohler, Franke, Miseno, and Ruvati for sinks and fixtures, and Top Knobs, Hardware Resources, and Jeffrey Alexander for cabinet hardware.

Lighting Design

Most people pick light fixtures toward the end of a project, but we plan ambient, task, and accent lighting during the 3D design phase as part of the overall layout so the kitchen works as well at 7am as it does at dinner.

Choosing a remodeler means trusting someone with your home and your budget. Here’s what protects you when you use our design and remodeling services:

Recent Kitchen Design Projects on Cape Cod

Good design solves real problems. These two projects show what that looks like when a dream home becomes reality across two very different coastal Massachusetts properties.

A Kitchen Remodel Is an Investment in Your Home's Future

In a Cape Cod home, the kitchen ends up doing more than its share of the work. It’s the room that fills first when friends drop by, the spot kids drift to after a day at the beach, and the place you return to morning after morning. All that life leaves its mark, which is why the kitchen is often the first space homeowners look to refresh.

Remodeling is how you protect the heart of the home. Quality cabinetry, durable surfaces, and layouts that adapt to changing family needs aren’t just upgrades — they’re choices that pay you back in time saved, stress avoided, and years of use without constant fixes. And when the time does come to sell, a thoughtfully designed kitchen is one of the first things that catches a buyer’s eye.

That’s why we see a remodel as an investment in more than property value. It’s an investment in how smoothly your days run, how comfortably you can host, and how long your kitchen will keep serving you well. With Thomas Michael’s Kitchen and Bath, the return is felt every single day you step into a space that’s built to last.

From Old to Bold — Onset, MA

This 1950s summer cottage came to us with a tired, closed-off kitchen that had no connection to the rest of the home. The design solution centered on removing the dividing walls between the kitchen and the three-season porch, merging the two spaces into one expansive, light-filled area. A new peninsula was added to create a natural gathering point without sacrificing workspace. White shaker cabinets, marble-look quartz countertops, and a chef sink completed the transformation from dated cottage to bright coastal home.

“Our 50’s summer home has been reborn into a bright, modern oasis. It’s like stepping into a whole new era of coastal living. The transformation is simply breathtaking.” — Homeowner, Onset MA

Harborview Haven — Hingham, MA

This South Shore waterfront project required a design that made the most of a spectacular harbor view without compromising kitchen functionality. Six feet of Pella windows were positioned to frame the view while preserving full counter workspace along the perimeter. A custom blue island with Vadera Quartz Sereno Gold countertops and a waterfall edge serves as the room's centerpiece, complemented by white perimeter cabinetry, KraftMaid glass-front uppers, and solid oak flooring throughout.

When Does a Kitchen Project Need a Designer?

Not every kitchen update requires a full design process. But some projects genuinely benefit from professional planning before anything is ordered or built. Here are the situations where working with a certified kitchen designer makes a measurable difference:

  • You’re thinking about removing a wall or changing the layout.
  • You’ve gotten conflicting opinions from contractors about what’s possible.
  • You want to avoid unexpected costs once construction starts.
  • Your home is in a historic district with permitting requirements.
  • You’re working with a tight or irregular floor plan that limits your options.
  • You’re making a significant investment and want to see the finished result before committing.

If any of those apply to your project, the design phase is not an added step. It’s what makes the rest of the project run smoothly.

Frequently Asked Questions

For straightforward updates like cabinet replacements or countertop swaps, you may not need a kitchen designer. However, for projects involving layout changes, structural work, or a significant investment, professional design pays for itself by catching problems before construction begins.
The most common mistakes are selecting materials before finalizing the layout, underestimating structural limitations, and delaying permit reviews. A certified designer resolves these issues early to avoid costly revisions and delays.
NKBA certification requires demonstrated expertise in space planning, materials, building codes, and accessibility standards. An NKBA-certified designer ensures your kitchen is both visually appealing and technically sound.
The design phase typically lasts two to four weeks depending on project complexity. This includes consultation, measurements, 3D renderings, revisions, and trade coordination.
Both options are available. We offer in-person showroom consultations as well as virtual consultations for homeowners who prefer to begin planning remotely.
